"Chargeable weight is whichever is greater: actual gross weight or volumetric weight. A 120 × 80 × 100 cm carton weighing 50 kg has a volumetric weight of 160 kg, so it is billed as 160 kg. Sea LCL instead compares cubic metres against tonnes and bills the greater as revenue tons."
Mode Selection
Density decides the mode: above roughly 167 kg per cubic metre, air freight bills on actual weight and gets comparatively cheaper.
Sea LCL uses the weight-or-measure rule, so 1 m³ and 1 tonne are billed the same. Cargo denser than 1,000 kg per m³ is charged on weight.
Consolidating loose cartons onto a pallet adds volume and can raise the chargeable weight even though nothing was added to the shipment.
